DR. K's IODOWASH

 

EQUIPMENT:

 

1.  Ludlum Mod. 14C Geiger counter with Pancake Probe.

2.  I-131 RADIOACTIVE LIQUID.

3.  Capintec CRC-15 dose calibrator calibrated for Iodine 131.

4.  Linoleum tile (unwaxed).

5.  Shielded glove box.

 

PROCEDURE:

 

1.  Place Linoleum in shielded glove box and dispense small amount of I-131 on tile.

2.  Allow I-131 to dry for 4 hours.

3.  SHAKE WELL and apply IODOWASH to contaminated tile.

4.  Let set for 30 sec.

5.  Wipe up IODOWASH with paper towels and place in dose calibrator.

6.  Record data.

 

DATA:

 

I-131 .............1.4 mCi. Placed on tile.

I-131..............1.4 mCi. Picked up by IODOWASH.

Geiger counter reading on tile before decontamination .....>1000 mR/hr (off scale).

Geiger counter reading on tile after decontamination...... 0.5 mR/hr (equivalent to background readings).

 

CONCLUSIONS:

 

The IODOWASH removed all the I-131 contaminant in one washing.
