DR. K's THALLIUM
WASH
EQUIPMENT:
1. Ludlum Mod. 14C Geiger counter with Pancake Probe.
2. Thallium-201 liquid.
3. Capintec CRC-15 dose calibrator calibrated for Thallium.
4. Linoleum tile (unwaxed).
5. Shielded glove box.
PROCEDURE:
1. Place Linoleum in shielded glove box and dispense small amount of Thallium on tile.
2. Allow Thallium to dry for 4 hours.
3. SHAKE WELL and apply THALLIUM WASH to contaminated tile.
4. Let set for 10 sec.
5. Wipe up THALLIUM WASH with paper towels and place in dose calibrator.
6. Record data.
DATA:
Thallium .............109
microCi. Placed on tile.
Thallium.............. 94
microCi. Picked up by THALLIUM WASH.
Geiger counter reading on
tile before decontamination .... 400 mR/hr.
Geiger counter reading on
tile after decontamination...... 2 mR/hr.
CONCLUSIONS:
The THALLIUM WASH removed
most of the Thallium contaminant in one washing. Another
washing should have been performed to remove the remainder, or the
initial washing should have been left on the surface for longer than 10
sec.
